Sheep Introduced at BKS Preserve to Assist in Weed Management PDF Print E-mail

ImageThe Conservancy's first restoration and enhancement project has been challenged by a proliferation of exotic weeds. Working with consultants and specialists, Conservancy staff has attempted to control the weeds so that the many native species of grasses, shrubs and trees will be able to effectively compete. One of the last remaining non-chemical control tools available to the Conservancy is sheep, which have recently been introduced to the site.

Downloadable Swainson's Hawk Video Available PDF Print E-mail

ImageA new video showing a locally-produced clip of the Swainson’s hawk is now available for viewing and downloading on the Conservancy’s web site. The brief video shows various aspects of the life of the Swainson’s hawk. This includes footage of a nest, of chicks, and a Swainson’s hawk in flight. Close ups of the hawk’s head and wings will help viewers identify the hawk.

Conservancy Adds New Preserves PDF Print E-mail

ImageThe Conservancy added to its inventory of mitigation land by recently acquiring its 14th and 15th preserves. Known as the Alleghany 50 and Cummings preserves, the additional 117 acres brings to 258.2308 the total number of acres acquired near Fisherman's Lake in the southern portion of the Natomas Basin.

ImageThe Conservancy secured a satellite photo of the Natomas Basin in order to track the progress of its restoration and enhancement construction activities. The image was captured on September 1, 2002 and clearly shows the Conservancy's first completed restoration and enhancement construction project on the Betts-Kismat-Silva preserve.

The last task was recently completed on the Conservancy’s first restoration and enhancement project, bringing the habitat construction effort on the site to a close. Now the Conservancy fine tunes its management of the site for the benefit of species covered under the Natomas Basin Habitat Conservation Plan (NBHCP). (An aerial photo of a portion of the Conservancy's BKS preserve appears in the banner at the top of this home page.) Wildlife has already begun to populate the preserve, including some recent exciting sitings.

Conservancy and Sutter County Ink Agreement PDF Print E-mail

In what may be the first of its kind between a habitat lands management organization and a unit of local government, the Conservancy and Sutter County have signed a development agreement governing habitat construction and development activity. The agreement will facilitate long range planning and coordination between the two entities.

Conservancy Acquires Its Largest Preserve PDF Print E-mail

The Natomas Basin Conservancy announced today it acquired the largest piece of mitigation land since its inception. The Conservancy acquired the portion of the Sills Ranch that lies in Sacramento County. The site totals approximately 575 acres in one contiguous parcel and lies adjacent to U.S. Highway 99 just south of the Sacramento and Sutter county lines.
